What We Hope Jesse’s Legacy Will Be

When you lose someone you love, people often ask how you want them to be remembered.

For us, the answer isn’t complicated.

We want Jesse to be remembered for how he lived.

Not only for how he died.

We want people to remember his laugh.

His personality.

His ability to make an ordinary moment more fun.

The way he could be quiet one minute and suddenly be the loudest person in the room.

The way he lived his life.

The way he loved the people around him.

And most of all, we want people to remember that his life mattered.

At Jesse’s Justice, we say:

Live Life Like Jesse.

Those four words mean so much to us.

Jesse lived.

He made memories.

He loved people.

He laughed.

He took chances.

He didn’t wait for the perfect moment to enjoy life.

And now, because we don’t get to watch him continue living his life, we have to carry that lesson forward ourselves.

We have to keep living.

Not because we have stopped missing him.

Not because the grief is gone.

But because his life deserves to continue meaning something.

We Don’t Want His Death to Be the Only Story People Know

There is a difficult reality that comes with losing someone suddenly and tragically.

People become curious about how it happened.

They want to know the details.

They want to understand what went wrong.

And those questions are understandable.

But Jesse was so much more than the circumstances surrounding his death.

He was a son.

A brother.

A grandson.

A nephew.

A friend.

He was a person with a future.

Dreams.

Plans.

Memories.

A personality that could fill a room.

His story did not begin on the day he died.

And it shouldn’t end there either.

That’s Why Jesse’s Justice Exists

When my mom and I started Jesse’s Justice, we knew we couldn’t change what happened to Jesse.

We couldn’t bring him home.

We couldn’t give him back the future he deserved.

We couldn’t erase the pain his death caused our family and will continue to cause our family for the rest of our lives.

But we could choose what we did with that pain.

We could sit in it.

Or we could try to build something from it.

So we chose to act.

We began advocating for Jesse’s Law.

We began creating resources for people experiencing grief.

We began working to bring education into schools and communities.

We began talking about what it means to be an active bystander.

We began encouraging people to call 911 when someone needs emergency help.

We began creating conversations about compassion, responsibility, and simply treating people like people.

And we’re nowhere near finished.

Passing a Law Isn’t the Finish Line

Jesse’s Law matters deeply to us.

But even if we achieve the legislative change we’re fighting for, there will still be work to do.

There will still be people who need education.

There will still be families who need resources.

There will still be young people who need to hear Jesse’s story.

There will still be communities that need to have difficult conversations.

There will still be people who need someone to remind them:

One call could save a life.

Legislation can change laws.

Education can change behavior.

Compassion can change the way we treat one another.

We need all three.

We Want Jesse’s Name to Mean Support

Five years from now, ten years from now, twenty years from now, we hope people hear the name Jesse’s Justice and think:

Support.

We hope a grieving person finds our organization and realizes they aren’t alone.

We hope a student hears Jesse’s story and remembers to call 911 when someone needs help.

We hope a parent teaches their child that kindness isn’t weakness.

We hope a community becomes a little more compassionate.

We hope someone who has never heard of Jesse learns his name and carries one of his lessons with them.

That is what legacy means to us.

Not simply being remembered.

But continuing to make a difference.

Jesse Is Still Part of Everything We Do

Every day we would give anything to have Jesse back instead of having an organization in his name.

Days when advocacy feels exhausting.

Days when grief feels heavier than usual.

But there are also moments when we look at what Jesse’s Justice is becoming and realize that his life is reaching people we never would have met otherwise.

His name is being spoken.

His story is being shared.

His life is being remembered.

And something better is growing from something that never should have happened.

We believe his life can continue to have purpose.

The Legacy We Choose

We cannot choose what happened to Jesse.

We cannot rewrite the past.

But we can choose what we do with the years we have left.

We can choose to love harder.

To show up.

To speak up.

To help.

To educate.

To advocate.

To support people who are hurting.

To make memories.

To appreciate the people sitting beside us.

To live.

Because that is what Jesse did.

And that is what we mean when we say:

Live Life Like Jesse.

His story is not only about the day we lost him.

It is about every day we choose to carry him forward.

For Jesse.

For justice.

For every family who needs support.

And for every life that might be changed because someone chose to care.

That is the legacy we hope to build.
