There are moments along this journey that remind us why we continue to fight.
Today is one of those moments.
We are honored to share that the House version of Jesse’s Law has officially been admitted by the Massachusetts Legislature and assigned a permanent bill number:
H.5437
An Act to Ensure Appropriate and Timely Emergency Medical Response
This marks the furthest Jesse’s Law has progressed since our advocacy began following the loss of our beloved Jesse.
While this does not mean Jesse’s Law has become law yet, it is an important milestone. Receiving an official House bill number means the legislation has formally entered the Massachusetts legislative process and can continue moving through the next stages toward becoming law.
Why This Matters
On March 25, 2023, our lives changed forever.
After Jesse was struck by a vehicle, he remained in the roadway for more than 45 minutes while multiple bystanders witnessed what had happened. Despite the seriousness of the situation, no one called 911 in time to save his life.
Out of that unimaginable tragedy came a promise.
A promise that Jesse’s story would not end with heartbreak alone.
Jesse’s Law was created to encourage immediate action during visible, life-threatening emergencies and to help ensure that future victims have a greater chance of receiving the emergency medical care they desperately need.
A Milestone Built by Many
This accomplishment didn’t happen overnight.
It represents countless hours spent meeting with legislators, sharing Jesse’s story, answering difficult questions, researching existing laws, gathering community support, collecting thousands of petition signatures, and advocating for meaningful change.
We are deeply grateful to Representative Homar Gómez for filing the House version of Jesse’s Law, Senator Jo Comerford for her continued leadership and commitment to this legislation, and their dedicated staff members who have worked alongside our family throughout this process.
We are equally thankful to every supporter who has signed our petition, attended an event, shared our mission, donated to Jesse’s Justice, or simply believed that one person’s decision to call for help can save a life.
This milestone belongs to all of you.
What Happens Next?
Legislation is a process, and there is still work ahead.
The House bill will continue through the legislative process as lawmakers review, discuss, and consider the proposed legislation.
The Senate version of Jesse’s Law (SD.3452) has been admitted by the Senate and is currently awaiting admission by the House. Senator Comerford’s office has shared that if the Senate bill is not admitted before the end of this formal session, they remain committed to refiling the legislation at the beginning of the next legislative session to give it the strongest opportunity to move forward.
